Swimwear cover-ups have swum a long way since the days of oversized T-shirts. Now you can wear your cover-up out to dinner and no one will ever guess you’ve been at the beach all day, thanks to the new “un-cover-ups.” Here are some ways to rethink your swimwear wardrobe this summer while spending more time enjoying the outdoors both in and out of the water.

THE SWIM DRESS. One of the most versatile items you can wear over your swimsuit or by itself, the swim dress is the ultimate cover-up. In crinkle cotton or slinky jersey, in short or long hem-lengths, short sleeves or long sleeves, you can determine the coverage. Look for swim dresses in fabrics with sun protection for even more value.

THE EMBELLISHED TUNIC. More of a long top than a dress, tunics have become one of the best go-to’s for any summer wardrobe, on and off the beach. Decorative embroidery, stones and beading add even more interest. In the season’s newest and brightest floral prints, tunics have bohemian flair. Sheer tunics are light and airy, a perfect choice for layering over swimsuits.

THE BUTTON-FRONT SHIRT. Another versatile “un-cover-up” which can do double duty in your wardrobe year-round is a button-up shirt. From short, white classics to longer shirt dresses, these breezy shirts easily button up over swimwear and are flattering to a wide variety of beach bodies. Try one in chambray to add a touch of Western spirit.

THE ANORAK JACKET. When the sun is sizzling, a heavy jacket is not what you pack in your beach bag, but if it’s a cooler evening or cloudy day, then a lightweight anorak may be the perfect “un-cover-up.” Choose from their rainbow colors complete in all-weather waterproof nylon. You’ll be prepared for any kind of day at the beach, come rain or shine.

THE CAFTAN. If you want long and loose, but lots of glamour, a caftan may be the ultimate “un-cover-up” for you. Kaftans or caftans originated in the Middle East and are now common all over the world. The flowing garment is popular at pool parties and has an old Hollywood kind of je ne sais quoi. You can even custom design your own caftan featuring prints of your favorite pet. Meow!

THE SWIM SEPARATES. With so many options available in swimwear collections, there are more ways than ever to cover up than ever before. Today’s options include long-sleeved tee rash guards and SPF-infused board shorts available in a variety of colors. Another choice given to swimmers are the high-waist miniskirts complete with tummy control. There’s something for everyone, not only to protect your skin from harmful sunburn, but to help disguise any uncomfortable parts you don’t want people to see.

Don’t forget to accessorize. Oversized scarves make great cover-ups, along with other important summer must-haves: hats and sunglasses.
