With cool breezes and a bit of sunshine, the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks were ready to setup the Memorial Day celebration. Elks volunteers Barbara King and Sheryn Howlett were at the Lodge first thing to
decorate the Lodge back yard and everything in the Lodge red, white and blue. Lodge Trustee Larry Colgan was on hand to get the canopies up with a little help from his friends. The volunteer kitchen staff, as always, made a delicious barbecue of hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, corn on the cob, watermelon and coleslaw and condiments of all types. DJ & Lodge member Roy Southerland was on hand to entertain with his beautiful voice, dancing and listening music, and karaoke. Over 250 members and their guests attended the back yard party. Participation by so many dancers and singers proved what a fun day that was had by all. Jean and Chuck Chapman, with the assistance of Irene Romero and Sheryn Howlett, sold raffle tickets toward a chance to win a beautiful, handmade quilt – winner to be chosen at the Lodges July 4th barbecue). Proceeds of the event went to benefit the Lodge and the many charities it supports. Exalted Ruler (ER) Jamie Camunas expressed her appreciation to everyone who helped make the day so successful. and all who came to celebrate our nation’s veterans past and present. ER Camunas offered a special thanks to the kitchen staff: Kevin Lindley, Pam Mackey, Josh Owsley, Brad Horst, Barbara King, Tenisha Campaneli, Mike Zaic and Julie Thomas as well as Vera Pavelec (greeter), Debbie Spicer, Nina McCann, Linda Cimmarusti, Sandy and John Bassler, Jean and Chuck Chapman and Mike Fenton.
The Mission Viejo / Saddleback Elks Lodge No. 2444, celebrating forty-nine (49) years of service to the Saddleback Valley communities, is one of eight lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a 150 year history of giving, “Elks Care, Elks Share.”
